You have to work? It’s a holiday.

No matter how long I have worked on long term care it seemes I still hear this statement at every holiday. Skilled nursing is 24/7.

Life in Healthcare is different than most

Many people don’t realize how much of healthcare is a day in and day out occupation. Many aspects of Healthcare don’t have holidays. Life happens regardless of the date on the calendar.

This is true for many settings. Hospitals and Nursing homes run 24/7. The people that are there require care no matter what the day is.

It takes a special calling

Those of us that work in these settings know what we sign up for. It is the cost we pay to have the payoff of all the great relationships and experiences we get to have with our residents. The simple cost of missing the cookouts and gatherings gives us just so much more in the end.

It’s all about our residents

The residents we work with give us a piece of their life. They share experiences and advice. They share a part of their life that cannot be found anywhere else.

Save me some leftovers

So set the alarm, get ready for work, and head in like any other day. Save me some leftovers and allow me to give the greatest gift that I can give….help to get better and fellowship. I would not trade it for the world. You can have your holiday, mine has much more meaning.
