March madness, the sign of spring

So unless you live under a rock, It is time for March Madness in college basketball. What some say is the ultimate championship tournament.

Breeds fun and competition between co-workers

Very frequently somehow, someway, a large percentage of people participate in a bracket challenge through either friends or work. It is always a great way to establish some friendly competition between friends and co-workers.

What builds teamwork better than friendly competition?

Competition can be a great motivator and ice breaker to bring teams closer together. Something as simple as filling out and tracking a bracket can facilitate improved communication between co-workers. It can also facilitate improvement in teamwork if the team comes up with a group bracket together and have a joint desire and drive to beat the other groups.

Why not involve your residents in the fun?

It is a great way to try and get your residents involved in the fun as we use it as a way to open dialog other than just the focus of why they are there. It is a good distraction to allow you to help push them further.

How can you involve your residents?

There are lots of ways to get your residents involved, even if they are normally not interested in college basketball. Sometimes just conversations about who played, or who won or lost can start a conversation. Especially if you talk about a local college. Being in North Carolina, there are no shortage of “local” college basketball teams involved in March Madness.

From either a Speech therapy or Occupaional Therapy perspective you can print out brackets and have them fill them out and track their picks each session. Speech therapy might be focused on memory or problem solving while Occupaional Therapy could be working on the ability to write.

Physical Therapy can perform basketball like activities while standing to focus on balance and weight shifts.

The only limit Is your imagination

So you have fun. Include your residents and team members and enjoy this time of year. The best part is you don’t even need to know anything about basketball to participate and have some fun. Ask any of the residents we work with, memories are priceless. Go make some.
