We all come into the Therapy world to make a difference in someone’s life. We study how to work with multiple illnesses and injuries. We study methods to help gain strength, range of motion, as well as functional mobility. For the most part we are usually pretty successful at what we do. We see it first hand as well as through data compiled from years of outcomes. We in therapy make a difference in someone’s life.
Sometimes it can be frustrating
As much as a motivator as we can be, sometimes we get to the one that just needs that extra push to do anything. These residents can be very frustrating with the lack of trying and excuses.
Constantly encouraging and motivating
Frequently we can push through some initial poor motivation and lack of effort. Through consistently encouraging and giving every opportunity, we can usually break through the barrier.
Some will just not get it
As much as we try to be advocates and encouraging to everyone, some people will just never recover. We need to remind ourselves that it is not our failure. Some people have just had a lifetime of bad choices. These could be uncontrolled diabetes, poor nutrition and eating habits, and no effort to do exercise.
These are the ones that as hard as we try, will not get out of bed or even stay out when we get them up. We cannot always overcome the extent of poor lack of self care and determination to better themselves. It does not diminish what we have attempted. Not everyone is fixable.
