Sometimes life seems like we are running along on a treadmill. We are just going through the motions on a straight line working towards an end point of some sort. That end point could be the end of a project, the end of the workday, or the end of the week.
There is no shame in this concept. It is actually what most of us do as part of our daily routine. We go through the same motions. Set the alarm for the same time, leave for work at the same time, drive the same way to work everyday. It is just a part of life.
Fortunately Therapy is different
For those of us that work in therapy we have answered a calling to make a difference in someone. This is a true statement regardless of the setting we work in or even the discipline we are.
We get to make a difference every single day. Sometimes we might not realize it. Sometimes we need it to smack us in the face to realize it. Like before when I was talking about being in a usual routine, we do seem to get that way in therapy sometimes.
This can be especially true in skilled nursing. Because we typically see the same resident everyday through our work week we can easily have a tendency to get into a routine of the same treatment day after day. We need to catch ourselves and purposely change to something else to continue to give them the maximum benefit. We also need to push to a further limit.
Purposefully make a difference today
So let’s make a concerted and purposeful effort to truely make a difference everyday. Yes it might only really be with one person, or not even your resident. But make an effort to do at least one thing that you know will make a difference for someone. You don’t know how something as simple as even a smile and a hello could be the difference in someone’s day.
Just imagine how much better we could make the world if we just focused on trying to make a single difference every day. It would be a gigantic snowball of positive change. It would create a giant wave across the globe and make our world a nicer place. So go ahead and start the revolution. Try to make one positive difference per day…… starting now.
