In November the country celebrates Veterans day. This is especially true in a Nursing home. There are always multiple ways that different facilities honor our veterans.
The Greatest generation
As long as I can remember the World War II generation were called the greatest generation. They were the ones that went to war and helped to establish the resurgence and growth of our country after the end of World War II.
As a therapist working in a Nursing home, you can tell the difference in a rehabilitation stay for those of that generation.
This generation was extremely hard working and believed in never backing down. They were typically the easiest residents to work with and would never give up or refuse to push to the maximum.
The changing of generations
Unfortunately we are now seeing less and less of the WWII generation as they have passed on and now are seeing more of the next generation the silent generation.
Even though we had the Korean war and then the Vietnam War, there were less military personnel during those wars than during the years of WWII. This is easily seen in the population seen in the nursing home.
As you walk down hallways or attend a coffee get together of veterans, it is very obvious that the sheer number of Veterans residing in Nursing homes is significantly smaller than after the WWII years.
So please thank a veteran
So now it is more important than ever to thank a veteran. There are sheer less of them and have served to let us be free and have sacrificed more than most. From the bottom of my heart…..Happy Veteran’s day, Thank you for your service.
